Autumn is a kaleidoscope of colors, scents, textures, sounds, and flavors.
Bright orange and green gourds.
The crunch of fallen leaves beneath our shoes.
The frosty nip in the air.
The aroma of a wood-burning fireplace on the wind.
Spicy apple cider.
A thick slice of fragrant pumpkin pie.
This autumn, why not invite your child to indulge in the bounty of sensory delights–and include spelling as part of the fun?
Start a Sensory Journal together.
Make a daily or bi-weekly ritual of cutting pictures from old magazines and pasting them into a scrapbook. Younger children can add simple labels like Oak leaf and Candy apple. Kids with more reading experience can get a bit more descriptive: “Today we bought corn husks and pumpkins from the farm.”
Remember, spelling practice doesn’t have to be an arduous chore. When combined with the simple pleasures of everyday life, your kids will associate learning new words with good times and good feelings!
